    Video Games and In-School Learning

    As I browse through Google's answers to my search query something catches my eye- the words "Revolutionize Educational Video Games". One click later and I'm at the Time US website reading about how big data and big money have joined up with big business (EA Games) to try and create "better" educational video games. Many questions come to mind as I read through (and I suggest you do as it's quite a program that is being developed!). How will all these children access the video games, especially in the "have-not" classrooms? How can teachers give immediate feedback in a class of say, 25 students, all playing different games/levels? At what point does a teacher's job become IT support instead of child-learning facilitator? And just what goes into a "better" educational game? What are we trying to teach kids using video games? None of these questions have easy answers although I think they are all worth a moment or two of consideration. I particularly liked this quotation from the article: "The trick, developers say, is to create a game that blends education and entertainment to tap into a fundamental truth about video games: They can be very addictive. Those in the educational video game industry refer to this challenge as the “broccoli and chocolate” problem. You can’t just take something good for you—broccoli or learning, in this case—and cover it with something you like—say, chocolate—to create something tasty." ...
